Dark Souls 3 Why Havea All the Lords of Cinder Come Back to Life Reddit

Was there ever a reason given why the Lords of Cinder abandoned their thrones?

The prophecy in the intro cutscenes tells us that when the bell tolls, the Lords of Cinder will rise from their graves to take up the task of linking the fire once more. However, the cutscenes says that, "in truth, the Lords will abandon their thrones."

My question is: Is there anything in the game, be it item descriptions or obscure NPC dialogue that tells us why each of the Lords refused to link the fire again?

well, linking the fire means certain death. ludleth accepted his fate and remained. the abyss watchers were obsessed with their mission, and went insane when the abyss tainted their ranks. aldrich wanted to keep eating, and was discovered by sulyvahn, who established a cult around him. yhorm and lothric simply did not want to die, and the latter was convinced that the endeavour was pointless anyways, content to watch the world crumble away.

level 2

Those are reasonable points. I was hoping that there might been more character development for these guys since they are the most important bosses of DS3.

level 1

A mixture of selfishness and self-preservation. Lothric was the only one with a semi good reason, he believed the Fire was destined to die and there was no point in postponing it, let the Age of Darkness come

level 2

I agree that Lothric had a better reason to not link the fire than his compeers. I was hoping that the other Lords had a more personal reason to shirk their duty other than, "I don't wanna." The bosses in Dark Souls 1 seemed to have more of a motivation to fight the Chosen Undead than the ones in 3.

level 2

"Selfishness and self-preservation" is what led to the flame being linked so many times in the first place. It's Gwyn's vanity that led to the undead curse.

level 1

Aldritch actually has two reasons why he didn't want to become a Lord of Cinder.

  • From the dialogue from Hawkwood, it seems some other group (they) made him a Lord of Cinder due to his power, so it is entirely possible he never wanted to become one in the first place.

  • He believes in he Age of the Deep, and has started to consume gods in order to make it happen.

level 2

Yeah, I remember Hawkwood saying that he was made a Lord, "Not by virtue, but by might." So does that mean that anybody can be tossed into the First Flame and made a Lord of Cinder? Because if Aldrich was forced into the flame then that raises the question of who sacrificed him to it?

level 1

Because they realised how pointless and prolonging the inevitable linking the flame was, I'd imagine. It says a lot about being a lord of cinder that no one wants to return to their duty after becoming one. Would you want to burn for all eternity just to keep the Gods' hold on power, especially if you were a frail and sickly child your whole life like prince Lothric?

level 1

I imagine with Yorm it was a matter of not wanting to repeat the tragedy of the profaned flame. I doubt he trusted the first flame to not annihilate everything just like the profaned. After being called by the bell of awakening Yorm travelled to his capital and sat on his scortched throne to await the end of the age of fire in relative peace, among the bones and melted gold of his former charges. Everything may end but at least he wouldn't be the one who directly caused it by being tricked again.
